Based on two years experience with my website, I am convinced the answer is a resounding YES! Not only yes, but, if you don't develop an internet presence, I believe you will be at a great disadvantage.
The internet is changing the way EVERY business is doing business. Every day, increasing numbers of people are using the Internet to look for information and services. Researchers estimate that by the year 2001, half of all Americans will be online. When looking for services and businesses - and therapists - internet users are more likely to turn first to the Web before they’ll look in the Yellow Pages. (see recent article)
Those
who don't attempt to navigate the Internet may be taking the biggest risk of
all. Almost overnight, the Net has become a huge part of the economy. A recent
study by the Center for Research on Electronic Commerce at the University of
Texas, commissioned by Cisco Systems Inc., found that the Internet economy grew
at an astonishing annual 174.5% rate from 1995 through 1998. At $300 billion
today, that rivals sectors like telecommunications and autos. The percentage of
households online will climb from 31% now to 54% in 2002, predicts market

Of course this means that if your practice isn’t advertised
on the Web, you’re invisible to this growing group.
The good news is that putting your practice on the Web is easy, and it can be
inexpensive. Knowing how to “work the Web” can connect you with more
prospective clients.

Find-A-Therapist is unique in its approach to online directories. Clients are attracted to Find-A-Therapist for two reasons: first, for the wealth of mental health information it offers. They are looking for information on depression, sexual abuse, alcoholism or a variety of other topics. Once on the site, they decide to find a therapist to address their issues. Secondly, they come to the site searching for a therapist, and find the information reinforcing the decision they have already made. Either way, they are already demonstrating a high degree of commitment to the idea of therapy, and are more motivated than many clients. A therapist with a presence on Find-A-Therapist instantly has greater credibility than one with just a listing in a directory. Potential clients are able to "get to know you" through your web page, and feel more comfortable having some of their initial questions answered before they meet you.
Clients using the internet generally are more affluent, more educated, and are more often self paying, another advantage for a therapist in private practice.
