Responding to a Disclosure of  Sexual Abuse

  • Be open to the disclosure
  • Encourage healthy choice making
  • Appreciate the difficulty
  • Resist overprotection/rescuing
  • Offer support and understanding
  • Indicate willingness to explore possible courses of action
  • Provide calm, encouraging, accepting response
  • Don't treat the person as "damaged goods"
  • Encourage the details of disclosure as the person chooses to and is able to
  • Provide assurance of lovability
  • Don't blame; don't deny
  • Don't let disclosure go down a "black hole" -follow up
  • Allow emotions or absence of emotion
  • Maintain normal expression of affection
  • Don't respond with panic
  • Respect boundaries
  • Encourage therapy
  • Support in future disclosures
  • Don't pressure or rush healing
