DiversityTherapists.comTM was created to meet the need of
ethnic groups to find qualified mental health clinicians and
resources sensitive to their needs.
According to the Department of Health
and Human Services in The Surgeon General's executive summary,
"Mental Health: Culture, Race And Ethnicity", the mental
health field is plagued by disparities in the availability of and
access to its services. It's undeniable that cultural differences
must be accounted for to ensure that minorities, like all
Americans, receive mental health care tailored to their needs.
(U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [DHHS], 1999)
Ethnic clients often find it
difficult, if not impossible in some areas to find a therapist or
counselor who is culturally responsive, and
language-appropriate to provide mental health services. Racism,
sexual and economic exploitation, violence, addiction, diet and a
legacy of multi-cultural factors may contribute to mental
health problems among culturally diverse societies.
DiversityTherapists.comTM
hopes to assist both client and clinician in successfully
addressing these issues and help all consumers take charge of
their mental health.
